Scott at Born Again Taxidermy in Colville did my velvet euro mount last year. I think he injects formaldehyde into the antlers. The velvet looks great, top notch outfit :twocents:

Its pretty cool to have it done

I have a spike elk I shot on 9/11/01 that has the velvet still on the antlers. The velvet is about 3" long on the base, looks cool.
Mine was done at Peter's Taxidermy in Graham. Kind afar for you though.....

I just was having the discussion with a friend about this matter.. I have 2 spike bulls and a 4x4 whitetail in full velvet.. I just cut the antlers off and they are in my garage..to this day there is nothing wrong with the velvet one is 10 years old and looks the same as it did the day I shot it!! no smell or nothing with them..so question is why do we go thru great lengths to save it? does it really need to be saved?

:yeah: I have a muley rack that I shot in 2006 archery in full velvet that I put on a plaque mount and the velvet looms like when I shot it. Just put it outside in the sun after I cut it off the skull. I also have a spike bull elk in my garage with velvet that looks normal and no smell. I took my Whitey in for shoulder mount and the taxi said he tans the velvet so he did that. I think as long as it gets dried out you are good.

A long time ago I read an article that said you can put them into a freezer, unwrapped for 6 months or so and it will freeze dry them.  Never got the chance to try it out as I could not connect on a buck when I was bowhunting back then.  I have seen sets that were left outside in barns & sheds, some looked okay. some lost most or all their velvet...
